  6. The Bootstrap collapse plugin allows you to toggle content on your pages with a bit of JavaScript and some classes. Flexible plugin that utilizes a handful of classes (from the **required [transitions plugin]({{ site.baseurl }}/components/transitions/)**) for easy toggle behavior.
  7. ## Contents
  8. * Will be replaced with the ToC, excluding the "Contents" header
  9. {:toc}
  10. ## Example
  11. Click the buttons below to show and hide another element via class changes:
  12. - `.collapse` hides content
  13. - `.collapsing` is applied during transitions
  14. - `.collapse.in` shows content
  15. You can use a link with the `href` attribute, or a button with the `data-target` attribute. In both cases, the `data-toggle="collapse"` is required.
  16. {% example html %}
  17. <p>
  18. <a class="btn btn-primary" data-toggle="collapse" href="#collapseExample" aria-expanded="false" aria-controls="collapseExample">
  19. Link with href
  20. </a>
  21. <button class="btn btn-primary" type="button" data-toggle="collapse" data-target="#collapseExample" aria-expanded="false" aria-controls="collapseExample">
  22. Button with data-target
  23. </button>
  24. </p>
  25. <div class="collapse" id="collapseExample">

  29. </div>

  31. ## Accordion example
  32. Extend the default collapse behavior to create an accordion.
  33. {% example html %}

  73. ## Accessibility
  74. Be sure to add `aria-expanded` to the control element. This attribute explicitly defines the current state of the collapsible element to screen readers and similar assistive technologies. If the collapsible element is closed by default, it should have a value of `aria-expanded="false"`. If you've set the collapsible element to be open by default using the `in` class, set `aria-expanded="true"` on the control instead. The plugin will automatically toggle this attribute based on whether or not the collapsible element has been opened or closed.
  75. Additionally, if your control element is targetting a single collapsible element – i.e. the `data-target` attribute is pointing to an `id` selector – you may add an additional `aria-controls` attribute to the control element, containing the `id` of the collapsible element. Modern screen readers and similar assistive technologies make use of this attribute to provide users with additional shortcuts to navigate directly to the collapsible element itself.
  76. ## Usage
  77. The collapse plugin utilizes a few classes to handle the heavy lifting:
  78. - `.collapse` hides the content
  79. - `.collapse.in` shows the content
  80. - `.collapsing` is added when the transition starts, and removed when it finishes
  81. These classes can be found in `component-animations.less`.
  82. ### Via data attributes
  83. Just add `data-toggle="collapse"` and a `data-target` to the element to automatically assign control of a collapsible element. The `data-target` attribute accepts a CSS selector to apply the collapse to. Be sure to add the class `collapse` to the collapsible element. If you'd like it to default open, add the additional class `in`.
  84. To add accordion-like group management to a collapsible control, add the data attribute `data-parent="#selector"`. Refer to the demo to see this in action.
  85. ### Via JavaScript
  86. Enable manually with:
  87. {% highlight js %}
  88. $('.collapse').collapse()
  89. {% endhighlight %}
  90. ### Options
  91. Options can be passed via data attributes or JavaScript. For data attributes, append the option name to `data-`, as in `data-parent=""`.
  92. <div class="table-responsive">
  93. <table class="table table-bordered table-striped">
  94. <thead>
  95. <tr>
  96. <th style="width: 100px;">Name</th>
  97. <th style="width: 50px;">type</th>
  98. <th style="width: 50px;">default</th>
  99. <th>description</th>
  100. </tr>
  101. </thead>
  102. <tbody>
  103. <tr>
  104. <td>parent</td>
  105. <td>selector</td>
  106. <td>false</td>
  107. <td>If a selector is provided, then all collapsible elements under the specified parent will be closed when this collapsible item is shown. (similar to traditional accordion behavior - this is dependent on the <code>panel</code> class)</td>
  108. </tr>
  109. <tr>
  110. <td>toggle</td>
  111. <td>boolean</td>
  112. <td>true</td>
  113. <td>Toggles the collapsible element on invocation</td>
  114. </tr>
  115. </tbody>
  116. </table>
  117. </div>
  118. ### Methods
  119. #### .collapse(options)
  120. Activates your content as a collapsible element. Accepts an optional options `object`.
  121. {% highlight js %}
  122. $('#myCollapsible').collapse({
  123. toggle: false
  124. })
  125. {% endhighlight %}
  126. #### .collapse('toggle')
  127. Toggles a collapsible element to shown or hidden.
  128. #### .collapse('show')
  129. Shows a collapsible element.
  130. #### .collapse('hide')
  131. Hides a collapsible element.
  132. ### Events
  133. Bootstrap's collapse class exposes a few events for hooking into collapse functionality.
  134. <div class="table-responsive">
  135. <table class="table table-bordered table-striped">
  136. <thead>
  137. <tr>
  138. <th style="width: 150px;">Event Type</th>
  139. <th>Description</th>
  140. </tr>
  141. </thead>
  142. <tbody>
  143. <tr>
  144. <td>show.bs.collapse</td>
  145. <td>This event fires immediately when the <code>show</code> instance method is called.</td>
  146. </tr>
  147. <tr>
  148. <td>shown.bs.collapse</td>
  149. <td>This event is fired when a collapse element has been made visible to the user (will wait for CSS transitions to complete).</td>
  150. </tr>
  151. <tr>
  152. <td>hide.bs.collapse</td>
  153. <td>
  154. This event is fired immediately when the <code>hide</code> method has been called.
  155. </td>
  156. </tr>
  157. <tr>
  158. <td>hidden.bs.collapse</td>
  159. <td>This event is fired when a collapse element has been hidden from the user (will wait for CSS transitions to complete).</td>
  160. </tr>
  161. </tbody>
  162. </table>
  163. </div>
  164. {% highlight js %}
  165. $('#myCollapsible').on('hidden.bs.collapse', function () {
  166. // do something…
  167. })
  168. {% endhighlight %}
